Dispelling Myths About Concrete Posts

3rd July 2025

An important decision when developing a new orchard is the type of structure your crop will grow on. As modern growing systems push for higher yields and greater efficiency, it’s critical that your orchard structure is engineered for durability, automation readiness, and long-term performance.

At Hortivate, we’ve seen strong demand for our pre-stressed concrete orchard structures in New Zealand, with many customers already experiencing the benefits of concrete over traditional options such as timber and steel.

But as with any innovation, new solutions bring questions—and sometimes misconceptions. Below, we unpack common myths we hear about concrete orchard structures and share the facts, so you can make informed decisions for your orchard.

Why Concrete Orchard Structures?

When planning your orchard, consider how your structure impacts:

  • Environmental footprint: choose materials with long life and minimal replacements.
  • Local suitability: structures must handle your region’s environmental risks, such as hail and wind.
  • Spray practices: structures should enable efficient 3-row or single-row spraying – a large part of this is the overall orchard design.
  • Hail protection: ensure compatibility with hail netting systems.
  • Ease of installation: saves time and labor.
  • Cost and availability: material supply vs lifetime value – consider the total cost of ownership.

Common Myths About Concrete Orchard Posts

Myth 1: Concrete Structures Are the Most Expensive Option

Many growers assume concrete orchard posts are expensive. While the upfront cost can be higher than some timber options, the lifetime value is significantly better. Concrete posts will last 50+ years without any quality and durability degradation and require minimal maintenance, unlike timber posts that may need replacement sooner due to rot, warping or breakage. When you consider reduced replacement costs, minimized repairs, and less downtime, concrete is often the more economical long-term choice.

Myth 2: Concrete Is Heavy, So It Must Be Slow to Install

Our pre-stressed concrete orchard posts are precision-made for fast installation. Installation crews accustomed to concrete can often install at speeds faster than timber. Concrete’s rigidity and consistant quality means that there are very few damaged posts during an installation. In many cases, projects finish faster with concrete, reducing time on-site and labor costs.

The concrete posts also have a smaller footprint, this allows the post to be vibrated into the ground faster, particularly in hard/stoney soil or where the ground has not been ripped.

Compared to wet timber posts, our concrete posts can be very similar in weight, or lighter in some cases. Below are the weights per meter of the typical posts we use in a concrete structure.

  • Internal Post – 11kg/meter
  • Perimeter Post – 25kg/meter
  • Corner Post – 44kg/meter

Myth 3: Are Concrete Posts Really Strong Enough?

The concrete posts are a very strong post option due to their consistent structural properties. Every concrete post has the same structural properties and are batch tested during manufacturing. This enables them to be engineered to withstand and surpass expected loads on the structure.

But all components must work together to create a strong and durable structure. This is why our concrete hail netting ready structures are tensile. Meaning the cross cables and wires are locked off to each post and the system is kept in tension.

Loose structural cables and wires are weak points and can be the cause of failure during a weather event.

Myth 4: Concrete Can’t Handle High Wind Zones

Refer to the answer above for this myth. Wind is one of the most destructive forces upon a structure. Wind will exploit vulnerable points of the structure and will progressively weaken it over time.

Concrete is a great option to combat wind as it is an engineered product and will not degrade over time. The concrete posts are pre-stressed which gives them some portion of flex, enabling them to absorb large forces.

Concrete Posts: Proven in NZ Orchards

Our customers are already seeing the long-term benefits of concrete orchard structures: reduced maintenance, increased stability, and peace of mind knowing their investment will last decades. Concrete structures also align well with future automation, offering consistent post placement essential for robotic operations.
